Mongolia Election Update: High Voter Turnout

The voter turnout in Mongolia’s election is 59.5% by 7:30 PM local time. It is expected to be sufficiently high level when polling stations close at 10 PM.  Concerns about the long weekend depressing participation seem unfounded.

The election administration is running smoothly.

Mongolia's 2024 parliamentary election today is historic in several ways, setting new records for participation and diversity:

  • Candidates: Over 1,300 individuals are vying for the 126 parliamentary seats.

  • Women Candidates: Nearly 500 women are running, representing 38% of all candidates. This signifies a significant push for greater female representation in parliament, currently at 17%.

  • Political Parties: A record 19 parties and 2 coalitions are competing, reflecting a more diverse political landscape.

  • Registered Voters: 2.2 million Mongolians are eligible to vote, the highest number ever.

This election holds the potential to reshape Mongolia's parliament, with increased female representation and a broader range of political voices.

The high number of parties, combined with at least a 4% threshold for proportional seat allocation, suggests a competitive race where smaller parties could play a significant role.
